Aynsley 1937 Art Deco Bone China Tea Trio – Handpainted Geometric Lattice Border

Made at Aynsley’s Portland Works in Longton, England, this stylish bone china tea trio dates to 1937 and comprises a teacup, saucer and cake plate.

Aynsley had been making china in Longton since the late eighteenth century. By the 1930s the firm was known for thin, white bone china tableware with brightly painted borders.

The white bone china with unusual handpainted border combines a structured apple-green lattice with alternating blush-pink and blue softened geometric panels and arches. Fine pink linework and small cobalt-blue drops soften the geometry with a playful flourish. The teacup also has an apple-green line painted around its foot.

This tea trio is a lovely example of the brighter, daytime side of Art Deco—made for tea and cake around a sunny 1930s breakfast or afternoon room table

Each piece carries the green Aynsley crown backstamp. Registered design number 778491 records the design’s original registration in 1932, while the factory dating indicates that this trio was produced in 1937.

A distinctive, very usable 1930s trio, with a design that still feels cheerful and remarkably modern today.

At nearly 90 years old, this trio remains in very good condition with only light wear consistent with its age.
