A handsome pair of Victorian Staffordshire companion Spaniel dogs, c. 1880.

Modelled as a complementary left-and-right pair, these dogs were designed to be displayed together, traditionally at either end of the mantelpiece. In Scotland, Staffordshire mantel dogs like these are often known as “Wally dugs”.

At approximately 25 cm (10 inches high)  they are a substantial pair with real decorative presence.

Each dog has an individually hand-painted face, giving them the slightly quizzical expression so characteristic of Victorian Staffordshire. Their moulded collars, chains and lockets retain traces of original gilding, now softly worn with age, with further gilt highlights remaining within the coat and ear detail.

The dogs are finished in a warm white glaze. One shows light age-related crazing, and both display the minor surface wear and variation expected of antique pottery of this age.

Check the base: the hollow construction, small vent hole, irregular hand-finished foot rim and genuine age-related wear all appear consistent with Victorian Staffordshire manufacture of this period.

A characterful and decorative late Victorian companion pair, increasingly difficult to find in this larger size.
