Matched Pair of Antique Early 1920s Noritake Hand-Painted with Individual Brushstroke Landscape Vases

A matching pair of 1920s Noritake Hand-Painted Lustre Landscape twin-handled vases, Morimura ‘M in wreath’ mark.

These antique vases date to the early 1920s, when Noritake still produced export porcelain to a high artisan standard, and are not their later, more commercially produced pieces.

Each vase is painted with a river landscape of arched bridges, distant hills, trees and flowering banks. The scenes sit on a yellow lustre ground that moves from soft primrose to vivid citron with a warm golden-apricot undertone. The handpainting is well executed, and fine brushstrokes are visible in the decoration. Small differences in the brushwork confirm they were painted by hand and give each vase its own individual character.

Lilac lustre collars, black banding and distinctive stepped geometric handles place them firmly in early Art Deco taste. The combination of Japanese landscape painting and Western geometric form is exactly what distinguished the better Noritake of this decade.
Both carry the blue Morimura “M in wreath” backstamp with Hand Painted · Made in Japan.
Condition is excellent for century-old porcelain. There is only slight, honest wear to parts of the dark edging; the lustre, painting and structure remain strong. Please study the photographs for the exact state.
